“And His Excellency Omertà fell”: the Maxi-trial in the national press. A review

Forty years on from the ‘Maxi-trial’, this article introduces and contextualises a series of articles from the national press of the time, reproduced below. It highlights the historical significance and pioneering nature of the event, reconstructing its development within the context of the fight against the Mafia during the 1970s and 1980s. It emphasises how the ‘Maxi-Trial’ led to the recognition of the Mafia as a structured and cohesive criminal organisation, contrary to the common perception that it was merely a custom or a mindset typical of Sicilians.
