Abstract

This article aims to highlight an exemplary case of artificial intelligence in music, where this technology has been
applied with rigor: the album Chain Tripping by the American band YACHT. After a brief introduction to the history
of technological innovations in music and some biographical information about the band members, we will examine
the tools and methodology used to compose this work, which has an atypical genesis. In particular, the focus is on
the open-source tools from the Google Magenta project, the training process for the artificial intelligence specifically
created to compose Chain Tripping, and the compositional rules established by the band to achieve a coherent result,
concluding with some reflections drawn from an interview with Claire L. Evans, the band’s lead vocalist and a key
member.
