‘PARAINOCERAMYA’ PSEUDORETRORSA (INOCERAMIDAE, BIVALVIA) FROM THE DORSOPLANITES PANDERI ZONE (VOLGIAN STAGE, UPPER JURASSIC) OF EUROPEAN RUSSIA

Abstract

The bivalve species ‘Parainoceramya’ pseudoretrorsa (Gerasimov, 1955) is redescribed. All occurrences of the species are summarized, including those from localities previously unreported. ‘P.’ pseudoretrorsa is widely distributed in the Dorsoplanites panderi Zone of the Middle Volgian Substage from the coast of the Barents Sea in the north to the Saratov Volga Region and northern Kazakhstan in the south. It has a narrow stratigraphic range within the Zarajskensis ammonite Subzone, and most of the finds of the species are confined to black shales. Thus, the range of this species is considerably narrower than that of any species of the genus Buchia and is comparable to those of the most rapidly evolving ammonoid species. The ‘P.’ pseudoretrorsa biohorizon is proposed here for this event; this is the first case of establishing this type of biostratigraphic unit based on bivalves. Furthermore, the Late Jurassic evolution of the superfamily Inoceramoidea is briefly reviewed and the prospects for identifying biostratigraphic units in the Upper Jurassic based on Inoceramoidea are evaluated.
